Insectoid Thumbs by DSil Insectoid Thumbs by DSil
Round two of the second race I designed for an MMO (first thumbs here: [link] ). The first one I did is at top left, and the three along the right side are the final thumbs the art director approved. As you can see, with the first four I had yet to venture into the phylum arthropoda. Once I made that jump, I really got cracking! To be honest, before this I had drawn nary an exoskeletal creature (I know, an embarrassing oversight for any would-be creature artist), so I scoured the internet for every reference picture I could find, and started mixing, distorting, and experimenting with the anatomical elements and design tropes I found. There are a lot of straight up copies in my sketchbook of the photos I looked at, which I might upload at an unspecified future date. Anyway, the final designs are sort of a beetle/mantis/wasp, every tough bug rolled into one. I think it probably is the best of the designs amongst these, though I'd like to play further with the chap second from the right on the bottom.

Blah! End text vomit. Anyway, more designs to come!

Thanks! I like that one too, but it was before we decided to go in such an insect-y direction.

Awesomesauce! The end product is lovely for all the things thomastapir mentioned, but I do like top-right corner as well. Beetle o' doooooom! The helmeted chap next to final design is cute, actually. :)

Is that a Sebulba influence in the non-insectine ones?

Ah, well then you'll be pleased to know that all three along the right side are versions of the same final design! :)

As for Sebulba... I was thinking of those ambulatory bats from Dougal Dixon's After Man, but I guess it does look more like a grouchy Pod-racer.

Sweet! Alien caste system?

Yeah, but those are even more nuts than Sebulba. I mean, what sort of acrobatics must the wing do to get there?

Is there a requirement to make insectoids walking on two limbs?
Also I can suggest to think a bit of asymmetry, although insects are not much about it

Ah, well, I could have given them four legs, but they'd still need to have arms and back pincers, so that's 8 limbs, and in MMOs complexity is the server's enemy, particularly for playable characters. So, though it pains me to say so, it is, if not required, certainly preferable from a game designer's perspective, to have them be bipedal. Which is my way of saying no, but I'm a chicken.

Hey man, you know what just occurred to me? Four limbs (two locomotory, two dextrous/manipulative), plus stag beetle pincers! That would give them some wicked range as well. Huh, I don't know why I didn't consider the "pincers" on the fore rather than the aft end....

Yeah, I kinda realized after I finalized the designs that I did precisely fuck-all with the mandibles. :(

Oh yeah, I think this is a much better solution for the second species...I really liked that first, more mammalian design, but my sense here is that this approach fits better for a stereotypical RPG world; the arthropod designs correspond more closely to recognizable real-world animals in the same way as the reptilian designs of the "lizard people."

I think that final one, right above your icon logo, is my very favorite. I see the mantid in there, but to me it reads as kind of a mole cricket/cicada, and THAT's a combination I can get behind!

Ooooh, mole cricket is a new one on me.
...googles... HOLY CRAP! I saw one of these on vacation in Italy when I was 10, drew it, and never successfully identified it. You... you just solved a mystery of my childhood. :O

Hey bro, that's what I'm here for!

I have a lot--A LOT--of insect and crustacean resources available, if you're interested. A few faves:

- Beetle galleries:

- Divers mantids and mantis shrimp:

- Arthropods galore:

- Not strictly arthropods, but containing many invertebrate studies, and fascinating in every respect:

Hope that helps (or at least entertains)! XD

P.S.--I know it's technically Beethoven's 9th, but the quote was too good to pass up. =P
