Reptilian Design: Turnarounds by DSil Reptilian Design: Turnarounds by DSil
Turnarounds of a playable reptilian race for an MMO, showing customizable color variations (round 2 of this design: [link] ). The bottom three are females. I based the color schemes on chameleons for the males, iguanas for the females. Emulating real reptile biology in having larger, more robust females than males is one of the ideas I'm most proud of in the development of this race, because I can't think of another MMO that does this. Mostly, I've seen males with biceps larger than their female equivalents' waists.

Super. Super work. It's really bizarre how so many artists feel obligated to stick breasts on their reptilian humanoids.

Really nice designs, man. I really like the idea for their sexual dimorphism here. I love when a playable female character model is based on other things than sexualizing them for fanboys, - such as actually looking like a member of her race. That's a truly respectable thing I rarely see in MMOs, especially when it comes to monster/animal-like races.

In fact there is an another MMO that uses a similiar idea for the sexual dimorphism of a reptile-like playable race; EverQuestII. There's a race called Sarnak. Females of the race are bigger than the males and the male and female horns/spikes are different; the male has a lot of very decorational-looking spikes and their horns are more forward-oriented, while the females have more "practical" heads, with very few spikes and backwards-oriented horns, also longer jaws and larger eyes. It kind of appears that in the evolution of that race, the females evolved to be the hunters or something, while the male's appearance is more about looking impressive and scaring away enemies. Or something like that. And yep, neither sex has breasts, since they're reptiles anyway.

From the comments I read that the MMO this race was designed for lost funding... Sorry to hear that. :( But you've got awesome skills and ideas so keep doing what you're doing. 8D Surely game developers will love your work. Personally, I'm considering game design education and I feel very inspired when I see people like you doing that job. I wish you good luck with your design works!! :D

In the Castlevania series, there's a man called Heinrich Meyer who was turned into a lizard man.

good idea with the dimorphism, but the 'bigger female' thing is true of snakes, in crocodiles males are bigger.
however great artwork.

Love these color studies, Daniel! I'm especially fond of the middle row, as they remind me of Nile monitors. It's cool just to see some more flamboyant and naturalistically reptilian color schemes in this "lizard anthros," like the "chuckwalla" studies just above the "Nile monitors." I was also thinking that these could easily represent breeding colors, or even mood displays ala chameleons. I don't think I've ever seen a game where the enemy changes color as he gets madder...Could be a great "life meter"! :)

I can only think of the enemy ships with two lives in Galaga.

Ooo, that's a good one...I quizzed my friends about it and one person suggested Bowser in Mario 64, I think he does actually change color as he becomes more enraged.

That, sir, is an awesome idea! It might take too much processing power to work smoothly in an MMO, but in some console game that would frickin' rule. Makes me wish there were more lizardman games out there.

It's true what they say--you can never be too rich, or have too many lizardman games.

Oh hey!, I meant to tell you, I was playing Gauntlet: Dark Legacy the other day--which has some pretty cool and varied tribal lizard men in its forest/swamp setting--and my initial misinterpretation of one of the enemies gave me an image flash for a reptile man with a frilled lizard kinda head apparatus. Then I started thinking that a cobra hood would be a cool motif as well...I was kind of fantasizing about these different rare specialized morphs having some kind of social status, being shamans or leaders or whatever; maybe these roles would be legitimately tied to special mystical or physical or intellectual abilities associated with their specific body types. Or perhaps the physical traits emerge secondarily as a result of their dedication to certain roles. That would make them good visual identifiers in the game, as well: this guy moves fast, or this guy's going to have strong magic, or everybody will fight to defend this particular type.

It's funny you should mention that, because the other race I designed actually featured just such specialized morphs, though they're not reptilian. More to come! :)

really interesting creatures, specially the male/female part

and yeah, there is not one of those games using large heavy females - maybe because they think "sex sells" and they don't want any risk!
just beautiful lovely barbies ...

Many reptiles have larger males, including crocodilians, which you seem to have taken inspiration from.

Well, uh, one that you'll probably not get to see, because it lost funding. But rest assured that if I hear word the project is back on, I'll plug the shit out of it on deviantart, because it could mean I actually get money!

Thanks for the comment, btw. :)

I'm very curious as to what MMO this would be that has something this awesome-looking as a playable race. It's a pity it went on hiatus, whatever it is.

It's a bummer indeed. I saw some of the work my fellow concept artists were cranking out, there was some excellent stuff.
