Reptilian Design: Turnarounds by DSil Reptilian Design: Turnarounds by DSil
Turnarounds of a playable reptilian race for an MMO, showing customizable color variations (round 2 of this design: [link] ). The bottom three are females. I based the color schemes on chameleons for the males, iguanas for the females. Emulating real reptile biology in having larger, more robust females than males is one of the ideas I'm most proud of in the development of this race, because I can't think of another MMO that does this. Mostly, I've seen males with biceps larger than their female equivalents' waists.

good idea with the dimorphism, but the 'bigger female' thing is true of snakes, in crocodiles males are bigger.
however great artwork.

Love these color studies, Daniel! I'm especially fond of the middle row, as they remind me of Nile monitors. It's cool just to see some more flamboyant and naturalistically reptilian color schemes in this "lizard anthros," like the "chuckwalla" studies just above the "Nile monitors." I was also thinking that these could easily represent breeding colors, or even mood displays ala chameleons. I don't think I've ever seen a game where the enemy changes color as he gets madder...Could be a great "life meter"! :)

I can only think of the enemy ships with two lives in Galaga.

Ooo, that's a good one...I quizzed my friends about it and one person suggested Bowser in Mario 64, I think he does actually change color as he becomes more enraged.

That, sir, is an awesome idea! It might take too much processing power to work smoothly in an MMO, but in some console game that would frickin' rule. Makes me wish there were more lizardman games out there.

It's true what they say--you can never be too rich, or have too many lizardman games.

Oh hey!, I meant to tell you, I was playing Gauntlet: Dark Legacy the other day--which has some pretty cool and varied tribal lizard men in its forest/swamp setting--and my initial misinterpretation of one of the enemies gave me an image flash for a reptile man with a frilled lizard kinda head apparatus. Then I started thinking that a cobra hood would be a cool motif as well...I was kind of fantasizing about these different rare specialized morphs having some kind of social status, being shamans or leaders or whatever; maybe these roles would be legitimately tied to special mystical or physical or intellectual abilities associated with their specific body types. Or perhaps the physical traits emerge secondarily as a result of their dedication to certain roles. That would make them good visual identifiers in the game, as well: this guy moves fast, or this guy's going to have strong magic, or everybody will fight to defend this particular type.
